On Monday, NYU Langone Health announced the appointment of Dr. Alec Kimmelman as their new CEO and dean of New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, marking the end of an extensive national search process.

Kimmelman, who has headed NYU Langone’s Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center since 2023, will assume his new responsibilities on September 1st, taking over from Dr. Robert Grossman, who is stepping down after 18 years as the leader of the hospital.

“I feel both humbled and enthusiastic about becoming the next CEO and Dean of NYU Langone, and I’m grateful for the trust the Board of Trustees and the search committee have shown in me,” Kimmelman stated.

The announcement made by NYU Langone’s Board of Trustees received praise from board chairman Kenneth Langone, who also served as co-chair of the search committee.

“We are thrilled to appoint Dr. Kimmelman to this role due to his exceptional abilities, extensive leadership background, and commendable integrity,” stated Langone, the billionaire entrepreneur and benefactor who amassed his wealth as co-founder of Home Depot.

Langone, who graduated from NYU’s Stern School of Business, expressed confidence in Kimmelman’s capability to “expand upon Bob’s legacy and guide our organization into its next stage of innovation and significance.”

Kimmelman emphasized his dedication to sustaining NYU Langone’s outstanding performance in patient care, education, and scientific research—expanding upon the significant advancements achieved during Grossman’s tenure.

Grossman praised his successor for their achievements, notably their pioneering work in molecular oncology.

“During his tenure at NYU Langone, most notably in his role overseeing the Perlmutter Cancer Center, Dr. Kimmelman has significantly reinforced our comprehensive academic healthcare network as a frontrunner in both research and patient care,” stated Grossman.

The incoming board chair, Fiona Druckenmiller, expressed her enthusiasm for working alongside Kimmelman.

“Ken and Dr. Grossman had a daring vision and exceptional collaboration that shaped NYU Langone into what it is now. I look forward to developing a comparable professional relationship with Dr. Kimmelman,” she said.

Under Grossman’s guidance, NYU Langone transformed from a local hospital into a nationally renowned academic health care system—reaching yearly earnings of $14.2 billion and experiencing considerable growth.

Recently, the network launched a new hospital in Suffolk County and started developing plans for an extensive outpatient facility in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Nonetheless, a suggested $3 billion initiative to construct an advanced NYU Langone medical facility at Nassau Community College has been suspended indefinitely because of “external elements that have created challenges which might be too difficult to surmount.”
Last week, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman stated.
